City of Asylum Alphabet Reading Garden

1406 Monterey Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

Nestled in the heart of the historic Mexican War Streets neighborhood, this garden offers neighbors and visitors a green escape. The garden

Designed by Joel Legual and installed by Eisler in 2016, the Alphabet Reading Garden is an extension of the non-profit City of Aslyum. The garden is nestled in the heart of the historic Mexican War Streets neighborhood. The small footprint of the garden combined with the proximity to neighbors and narrow, congested city streets made this installation a challange.

Included in the paving are custom pavers featuring letters drawn by guests to City of Aslyum events. Planted with a mix of traditional and native plants, the garden matches both the historic and progressive nature of the Mexican War Streets neighborhood.
